Gluck’s most famous opera in the form of a puppet show? This was nothing unusual in the 18th century. Every time the powerful banned an opera for moral or other reasons created an opportunity for a marionette performance: after all, there’s nothing wrong with puppets. Valer Sabadus sings the Orfeo in the soprano register, just like Gluck adapted it for the famous castrato Millico in Parma in 1769. The rarely performed “Parma version” is up for surprises in other respects as well. Especially through the scenic realisation by the Viennese Kabinetttheater and Julia Reichert’s imaginative puppets.
